Renault says double checks by itself and French authorities have found there is no radiation from Japan-sourced components.

Customers have posed the radiation question to Renault through its dealerships, but the automaker says nothing has been found.

“Indeed parts that come from Japan are being checked, but not only by Renault,” a spokeswoman for the automaker told just-auto from Paris. “They are already being checked by the French national service in charge of that.

“We have not found any radiation, the risk is really, really minimal. Obviously there is some debate, some clients ask the question.”

From the automakers’ perspective in Japan, The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) added it was “fully confident” in the safety of its members’ vehicles, but recognised consumers’ needs to be reassured.

A statement from JAMA said: “For that reason, JAMA has initiated its own procedures to test the radiation levels of vehicles produced in Japan, having enlisted the expertise of an external authority specialising in the field.

“In addition to the fact that, in all the areas where JAMA member companies maintain production bases and at all their ports of shipment, the radiation levels recorded are not harmful to human health and the tests implemented by JAMA – which are conducted directly on various designated areas of the surface of vehicles – are showing results that fall within the range designated by the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan as being non-threatening to human health.”
