Renault is reported to be considering expanding production of its latest Clio compact hatchback in the Valladolid plant in Spain, alleviating job fears there because of disappointing sales of the Modus ‘mini-minivan’ or small MPV.
According to Reuters, the Les Echos newspaper said on Thursday a decision had already been taken but a company spokeswoman told the news agency the project had not yet been fully approved.
“It is a plan that is being studied. Valladolid is not running at full capacity at the moment and Clio uses the same platform as the Modus that is being built there,” she told Reuters, adding: “Flins is running flat out and production in Turkey is coming on stream.”
The paper reportedly quoted labour union sources as saying Valladolid would make 300 Clios a day from the fourth quarter this year, boosting production of the Car of the Year 2006 model from its current sites at Flins in France and Bursa in Turkey.
Separately, Reuters added, the spokeswoman had no comment on a report in Le Parisien paper that said the group would use its Alpine brand more extensively for top-range cars.
