Renault told Reuters it was talking with Spansih authorities about funding to keep the factory open but it declined to say whether it would shut the plant should it fail to secure subsidies.


“Renault and the local Spanish authorities are looking for solutions to ensure the continuity of the site,” a spokesman told the news agency. Renault employs 2,429 people at the Valladolid producing Modus minivans and Clio III models.


A media report on Monday had said Renault would shut the plant unless it received state aid.


“We cannot say this,” the Renault spokesman told Reuters. “When we decide to allocate a vehicle in one plant we take a range of criteria into account … This is a simplification to say that we could close a site just for this (subsidies) reason.”
