PSA has revised its strategy for developing and introducing diesel hybrid technology.
Previous strategy to introduce the technology on a mid-size car such as the Citroen C4 by 2010 has been abandoned in favour of a slightly looser date of 2010/2011 on a premium car.
Dominic Lee, head of PSA Peugeot Citroen in the UK, said PSA had been applying for state funding to support the development work, but after a year and a half this had still not been approved, so the automaker has decided to go it alone.
PSA had planned that the add-on cost would be no more than EUR2,000 for the diesel hybrid version but, without support for the development programme, this objective had been abandoned. The company decided that a premium price would be easier to command on an upscale model.
At the same time PSA is planning to significantly expand the roll-out of stop-start technology, selling 1.6m cars with the technology by 2012.
