PSA Peugeot Citroën is adding two shifts and taking on temporary workers at its Valenciennes plant in northern France to meet strong demand in China for automatic transmissions.
The company said it wants to produce an additional 5,500 AL4 units between April and June and is adding permanent night and weekend shifts.
Daily output of the AL4 transmission will increase from the current 1,300 units to 1,600 in April, 1,800 in May and nearly 1,900 in June.
Including the five and six-speed manual gearboxes and the manual compact automated gearbox, total daily production in Valenciennes [also home to Toyota’s Yaris plant – ed] will rise to 6,100 units in April, 6,750 in May and 6,900 in June.
The PSA plant exports over 70% of its automatic transmission output to China.
These transmissions equip half of all the vehicles sold by Peugeot and Citroën worldwide. Valenciennes currently employs 2,200 people.
