According to OICA, the global umbrella organisation for national automotive industry trade associations, the global automotive industry generated a global turnover valued at EUR1.9trillion in 2005.
“If vehicle manufacturing was a country it would be the sixth largest economy in the world,” the organisation said on its website.
66m vehicles were produced globally in 2005, employing more than 8m people directly. OICA said that this was over 5% of the world’s total manufacturing employment.
The industry also invested almost EUR85bn in research, development and production. Several manufacturers were ranked amongst the top 10 investors in R&D.
