Tata Motors, India’s largest player in the CV segment, has launched its new LPT 909 EX Turbo truck in the six-tonne payload segment and is aiming at increasing its market share from 33% last fiscal year to 60% this year in a segment which, last year, accounted for 15,000 units.
The new truck, part of Tata’s EX series, is Euro I-compliant (the current emissions requirement for CVs in India) and is priced at INR 624,000 (€11,775) ex-showroom. The new truck will be launched countrywide in phases – it has already been launched in Maharashtra state and, by June or July, will be introduced in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
The commercial vehicle segment in India is currently buoyant with lots of infrastructure development being undertaken. The movement of steel, cement and other raw materials coupled with low interest financing has resulted in a boom in the sector. Tata Motors, the market leader, sold 12,100 commercial vehicles in April 2004 compared with 7,034 units in April 2003. The total number of commercial vehicles sold in April was 19,867.
