General Motors India has posted a surge of 123% in June 2004 sales year-on-year, contributed mainly by the Chevrolet Optra. The company sold 2,418 cars in June 2004 compared with 1,082 cars last year.
Out of this, the company sold 804 Optras – the car has now emerged as the leader in its segment with a 25% market share and now leads the Toyota Corolla.
Cumulative sales of Chevy Optra from March to June this year are 3,557 cars. The rest of GM’s volumes include 800 units of the first batch of Chevy Tavera and 786 units Opel Corsas.
GM India is on growth course with 3,000 orders for the Tavera. In 2003, GM had doubled its sales to 15,000 and now targets to double sales again in 2004.
