Maruti Udyog Limited sold 42,480 vehicles in August 2004, including 4,820 exports, up 32.2% year on year on August 2003.
For April to August 2004, Maruti Udyog posted total vehicle volume growth of 17.8% year on year.
In spite of the impressive jump, the company is not very happy. It says the transporters’ strike towards the end of the month put a dampener on the results.
Sales of the 800 (the 1980s Suzuki Alto-based entry level subcompact) continued to slide in August, by 27.4% to 8,713 units, but Maruti sales were bolstered with gains in the small car segment where its Zen, WagonR and Alto, posted a 76.8% volume rise to 20,950 units.
The recent price revision and restyle for the Esteem helped boost sales 104.6% to 2,472 units in August. Maruti’s total domestic passenger car sales increased 29.1% to 37,524 units.
