Brazilian car production increased 22.6 percent in March compared with February, according to the Brazilian National Automakers’ Association (Anfavea), writes Rogério Louro Alves.
Last month, local vehicle makers produced 155,439 units, up from 126,755 in February.
Total sales of locally made and imported models also grew to 132,829 in March, an increase of 19.4 percent over the 111,222 units sold in February.
Last month, Brazilian car makers exported 30,064 vehicles, up 28.5 percent over the 23,393 shipped in February.
However, the first quarter 2002/2001 production comparison showed a drop of 8.8 percent.

Between January and March of this year, 354,306 vehicles were sold in Brazil, down 15.5 percent on the the 419,512 units sold in the first quarter of last year.
Brazilian vehicle exports also decreased 7.6 percent in the first quarter to 70,289 units, compared with the 76,102 units shipped in Q1 2001.
Anfavea described the first quarter result as acceptable due to the after-effects of a downturn that affected the Brazilian car market in the second half of 2001 and the three long holidays in the first quarter of 2002 (New Year, Carnival and Easter).
The vehicle makers’ association expects sales to rise in the next few months and forecasts 2002 production to increase about five percent while sales rise around three percent compared with 2001.
