Fiat do Brasil is the biggest supplier to the new Chinese Palio assembly line now operating in China, writes Rogério Louro Alves.
The compact car is assembled by Nanjing Fiat (a joint-venture between Fiat and China’s Yuejin Motor Group) using more than 500 components made by Fiat in Brazil.
The South American operation ships engines, fuel tanks, wheels, steering-wheel and headlights to China and expects to increase exports to China from $R2 million ($US850,000) last year to $R65 million ($US28 million) in 2002.
Chinese Palio producton began at a rate of 50 units per day with Nanjing Fiat expecting to increase output to 150.
