The limited-run Volkswagen Golf GTI 337 Edition, launched at the New York motor show last week, is being built by Volkswagen do Brasil, writes Rogério Louro Alves.

The São José dos Pinhais plant, Paraná state, will produce just 1,750 examples of the new derivative for sale only in the US and Canada.

The 337 is based on the Golf GTI 25 Jahre (German for “year”) previously built in Europe to celebrate 25 years of the Golf GTI.

Every GTI 337 Edition will be painted silver and standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, red disc brake calipers, body kit with chin spoiler and side skirts, red-accented leather upholstery, a Monsoon sound system and chromed exhaust tailpipe.

The limited edition, which costs $22,225 in the US, has VW#;s familiar 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine tuned to develop 180 hp and a six-speed manual transmission.

The numerals ‘337#; in the limited edition model#;s name come from the code name used by Volkswagen when developing the original Golf launched in the 1970s.

The additional 1750 limited Golfs should boost Volkswagen do Brasil exports about 10 percent this year.

Last year, the Golf was the company#;s export volume leader with 52,365 units shipped, including 32,400 to the US and 10,000 to Canada.
