General Motors Europe is readying new engines ahead of tough new Euro VI emission laws due to take effect in September 2014.

Opel and Vauxhall engines will have three new engine families, Autocar magazine reported.

These are a medium diesel engine (MDE) – a 1.6-litre turbodiesel on sale from 2013. There will also be a small gasoline engine with capacities between one and 1.4-litres. The medium gasoline engine will be 1.6-litres and GM will also increase the power of its two-litre ‘family B’ diesel.

GM Europe’s head of engineering, Rita Forst, told the magazine, “We are investing heavily in new powertrains ready for Euro 6 and to ensure we stay top of the class.”
