Volvo Trucks is moving on with its North American Class 8 battery electric truck project.

It recently started European sales of electric trucks for urban transport and demonstrated electric concept trucks for construction and regional distribution and has now integrated EV technology into the existing North American VNR model.

A recent pilot demonstration at a specialist truck outlet was part of the company's Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions (LIGHTS) project, a collaboration between 15 public and private partners to demonstrate the viability of all electric freight hauling in high density traffic and urban areas.

The electric VNR project trucks will be fo into commercial operations with two of California's leading freight companies.

Volvo Trucks claims the model will become the ideal truck for short- and regional-haul applications like heavy urban distribution, and other applications where electric trucks will first have the greatest impact.

Serial production and commercial offering starts late in 2020.
