Land Rover insiders at Detroit said that the business case for the LRX has been put to all potential new owners.

“It’s a vehicle we would very much like to do,” said one Land Rover executive. “A lot depends on the new owner and on the reaction we get to the concept.”

How close a production version remains to the Detroit concept remains to be seen but designer Gerry McGovern is keen that it retains its essentially sporty look.

He said: “The concept is very low and sporty but the LRX is still very functional and is designed to have the off-road capability that Land Rovers are famous for.”

The LRX is described as a cross-coupé, and dramatically extends the scope of what Land Rover stands for. Though smaller than the Freelander 2/LR2, the LRX is conceived as a premium car, designed to appeal to new customers in the luxury and executive sector – those who want many of the benefits of a 4×4 and the visual presence of a larger vehicle, but in a more compact package.
