Tata Motors’ luxury vehicle unit Jaguar Land Rover said it would add diesel power options to most of its US range, beginning with the 2016 Range Rover and Sport luxury SUVs next autumn.

North America president and CEO Joe Eberhardt said: “We intend to roll out fuel-efficient diesel powered vehicles across Jaguar and Land Rover lineups on virtually every model over the next three years. Almost every vehicle will offer an optional diesel powertrain delivering anywhere from 20% to 30% improvement in fuel economy versus the comparable gasoline version.”

The first two will be the Range Rover Td6 and Sport Td6, both capable of delivering 25 miles per [smaller 3.7-litre US] gallon combined, a 32% improvement compared to their petrol supercharged V6 equivalent. The US-spec three-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine is quoted at 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque.

Jaguar Land Rover US sales for 2014 slightly exceeded 2013, 67,238 units compared to 66,962 units in 2013.
