Honda launched the redesigned 2015 Fit for NAFTA markets at the Detroit show.
It will be manufactured for the first time in North America at the new Celaya, Mexico plant which has annual capacity of 200,000 units. The plant will begin mass production next month, ahead of the Fit’s spring showroom debut, and add production of a new small SUV later in the year.
The new Fit is slightly shorter (-1.6 in) and wider (+0.3 in) with a longer wheelbase (+1.2 in) than its predecessor, sold as the Jazz in most markets, resulting in improved handling and manoeuvrability. Passenger volume (+4.9 cu ft) and rear legroom (+4.8 in) are increased.
All US models will have claimed class leading standard features including Bluetooth, multi-angle rearview camera, and ‘expanded view driver’s mirror’. Features such as smart entry with push button start, heated side mirrors, sunroof, heated front seats, LaneWatch display and a seven inch display audio touchscreen interface with smartphone connectivity will be available. Leather upholstery is a new option for the US.
The 2015 Fit will also introduce a new direct injected, 1.5 litre, DOHC, i-VTEC engine to the US. This developes 128 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 114 lb ft of torque at 4600 rpm, up 11hp and 8 lb ft compared to the outgoing engine, while reducing weight and improving efficiency. Transmissions are six speed manual or an optional continuously variable (CVT) unit with optional paddle shifters.
Bringing the Mexican factory on line gives Honda North American annual capacity of 1.92m units and ability to manufacture vehicles in all product segments. Approximately 98% of all Honda brand vehicles sold in the United States will now be sourced from the automaker’s plants in North America.
