The new Chevrolet Spark, based on the Beat concept shown at the 2007 Detroit motor show, will make its debut at the Geneva motor show in March before going on sale in the UK and the rest of Europe next year.

It will go on sale in North America from 2011.

“I’m really pleased that I’ve managed to persuade them to take the car in North America as well,” Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific said at the Detroit show.

The Spark, developed largely in Europe, will be built by GM Daewoo in South Korea, which – with most output now badged Chevrolet – is currently one of GM’s success stories.

Production in 2008 was a record 1.9m which included 881,960 complete vehicles sold both in Korea and abroad and another 1,023,128 complete knock-down (CKD) assembly kits.
