It will go on sale in North America from 2011.

“I’m really pleased that I’ve managed to persuade them to take the car in North America as well,” Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific said at the Detroit show.

The Spark, developed largely in Europe, will be built by GM Daewoo in South Korea, which – with most output now badged Chevrolet – is currently one of GM’s success stories.

Production in 2008 was a record 1.9m which included 881,960 complete vehicles sold both in Korea and abroad and another 1,023,128 complete knock-down (CKD) assembly kits.

The Beat was one of a trio of concepts shown two years ago.

GM North America president Troy Clarke said positive feedback from over 2m people persuaded the company to proceed with production.
