It’s 60 years almost to the day since Chevrolet first launched its iconic Corvette sports car and the wraps came off the seventh generation at the Detroit show.
The redesign will be the quickest yet, powered by a 450hp LT1 engine enabling a sprint to 60mph in just four seconds. It goes on sale in the autumn and will head across the Atlantic to Europe towards the end of the year.
Good news for right hand drive markets like the UK is that Chevrolet is planning right hookers although, according to insiders, this is unlikely to be until 2015 at the earliest. [There have been hints from Ford that its Europe-bound next-gen Mustang due about 2014 will also be available RHD – ed.]
The latest version carries the Corvette Stingray name. Global product development chief Mary Barra said: “To carry the Stingray name the car needs to have the perfect combination of design, technology and performance and I think we have achieved that.
“It’s incredible to think that we first launched the Corvette 60 years ago and the latest generation remains true to its roots back in 1953 – a uniquely American take on a European sports car.”
There’s plenty more to come from Chevy which will be rolling out some 20 new or refreshed products in 2013.
