Hyundai will add a four-door sedan version of the new i10 hatchback to its line in India to take advantage of the growing demand for such B-segment models in a market where it is currently second to Maruti Suzuki.
Called Xcent, the newcomer was unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo and is due to be introduced next month.
The Indian version of the five-door i10, which differs considerably from that offered in Europe, is already on sale. It is known as the Grand i10 in India to reflect its intended role as a family car.
The Xcent is being hailed as a more premium offering in keeping with its saloon body. Hyundai said it would be available with unique technology features in its segment in India, including full climate control, a smart key with pushbutton starting, a rear parking camera, powered folding mirrors and dual front airbags which are not required by Indian safety regulations.
The car will also major on long-distance comfort and space, claimed Hyundai. The powertrain choice will be revealed next month.
The Xcent is being made exclusively in and for India and will come, like the rest of the local range, from the company’s plant at Chennai which has capacity for 670,000 units a year.
