A 50-50 joint venture between Russian truck maker Kamaz and Daimler, Daimler Kamaz Rus will apply for a special investment contract (SPIC) to build truck cabs in Tatarstan by the end of August, according to a local news report.

A factory with capacity for 57,000 cabs is currently being built in Tatarstan, RusAutoNews.com reported. Construction started in March 2016 and is scheduled for completion by 2018 with production planned for 2019-2020.

Cabs will be shipped to truck assembly lines at both Kamaz and Mercedes-Benz truck plants. The cab factory will have welding, painting, welding, and logistics sections plus an energy centre, on a total area of 67,900 square metres.

Earlier media reports had said the plant would cost EUR400m.

Daimler announced last February it would build cars in a joint venture plant in the Moscow region in which the Kamaz/Daimler JV would be involved.

The RusAutoNews.com report also said the Mazda Motor Corporation/Sollers joint venture, Mazda Sollers Manufacturing Rus, had signed a SPIC proposing construction of an engine factory in Vladivostok while BMW (car production in Kaliningrad) and Hyundai (engine production) were also expected to sign special investment contracts.
