Workers at Volkswagen’s Czech unit Skoda Auto are to hold a one-hour warning strike on Wednesday to push their demands for a pay rise, their union’s chief reportedly said on Tuesday.
Reuters said Skoda management has been on a strike alert since last week over union demands for a 10% pay rise in a new wage agreement which is to replace a deal that expires on Thursday.
Management at the firm – which has sought to bring down costs and boost productivity – had originally proposed an increase matching inflation, which reached 2.8% last year, the report added.
Union chairman Jaromir Cvrcek told Reuters the union members and their supporters would stop working for one hour and gather for a meeting on Wednesday, provided collective bargaining talks fail to bring results that they would be happy with – further talks are scheduled for Wednesday at noon local time.
A Skoda spokesman told the news agency the company hoped to avoid a more serious strike action.
