Škoda Auto has produced 11m vehicles at its main factory in Mladá Boleslav, accounting for around half of all the cars the VW group subsidiary has made.

Six model lines are currently produced there: Octavia and Combi (wagon), Fabia and Combi, Rapid and Spaceback (hatch/wagon.

As part of the most comprehensive product renewal programme in its corporate history, the Volkswagen group company has extensively modernised and expanded the factory over the past three years.

“Mladá Boleslav is the heart of the global Škoda production network,” said Michael Oeljeklaus, Škoda board member for production. “This [milestone], 11m vehicles produced, demonstrates the strength and importance of both the plant and the company. More than 50% of all Škoda cars built to date have left the production lines in Mladá Boleslav, of which 1m were produced in the last two years alone.”

Almost 10,000 employees work in production. To accommodate the new models, the plant was modernised and expanded. Capacity of the production line was boosted from 800 to 1,200 vehicles a day. A new body shop and a fully automated paint shop were installed. A new, environment-friendly press line was also built.

As part of the company’s growth strategy launched three years ago, Škoda plans to increase deliveries worldwide over the next few years to at least 1.5m vehicles a year. It delivered 920,800 vehicles worldwide last year, making 2013 the second-best sales year in its history. The eight new or revised models launched was the largest number of new models rollled out in a year.
