Ford has announced plans to expand its assembly plant in Rayong, Thailand, as it looks to double output in the country to 300,000 units per year.

The new capacity will allow Ford to target export markets more aggressively, as regional integration moves up a gear with the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community at the end of the year.

The new THB6.5bn (US$181m) plant, which will produce the Ranger pickup truck and Everest SUV models, will also export to markets further afield including Australia and New Zealand, Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Construction is scheduled to begin next year.
