China's internet platform DiDi Chuxing has signed an agreement with German automotive components manufacturer Continental AG to collaborate in exploring and developing opportunities in the area of intelligent connected car technology.

The two companies will work together in the development of info-tech/communication products for new-energy vehicles. Continental will initially provide connected head units, or digital displays/interfaces, for DiDi's first-generation customized ride-sharing vehicles.

This partnership could open up a new significant expansion front for Continental in the provision of connected head units for China's fast-growing ride-sharing and connected car industry.

Earlier this year DiDi announced a partnership with more than thirty vehicle manufacturers in China, including FAW group, BAIC and GAC, to develop a standard integrated car operator platform covering the provision of business services, including after-sales services.

Autonomous and intelligent driving, ride-sharing and connected cars are expected to be significant sources of growth for the global automotive industry in the future.

Didi is aggressively moving into the ride-share space in China and also looking to gain presence and market power in associated sectors and technologies (moving along the 'value chain').
