The Latin America News Digest reports that Volkswagen will start assembling heavy trucks in Colombia in its plant in northern Bogota, in the second half of 2004. Volkswagen produces the heavy-duty trucks – up to 40 tonnes GVW – in Brazil.


Volkswagen will provide the chassis and the rest of the vehicle will be assembled in the Colombian plant. Volkswagen will also assemble small buses in the Colombian plant.


According to Volkswagen representative in Colombia, Oliverio Garcia, the company has a market share of 17% at present on the Colombian market and is behind South Korean carmaker Hyundai.


Volkswagen started sales in Colombia of the Volkswagen Gol Plus car, the minivan Volkswagen Fox and the light truck Touareg at the beginning of 2004. Volkswagen is not expected to start sales of other models in Colombia until the end of 2004.
