Colombian vehicle sales reached 12,293 in January 2006, compared to 9,284 units for the same month of 2005, according to consultancy Econometria, cited by the Latin America News Digest.


Sales of imported vehicles sales rose to 7,174 units last month, compared to 4,722 in January 2005. Sales of locally assembled vehicles rose 12.2% to 5,119 during the month.


General Motors Colmotores topped the table with 5,028 units sold in January 2006. Local group Sociedad de Fabricacion de Automotores (Sofasa) was second with 2,627 and Hyundai was third with 1,415 units sold.


The report noted that Colombia vehicle sales rose to a record 146,567 units in 2005, up 27.9% year-on-year.
