General Motors’ Colombian unit has launched a satellite-tracked roadside assistance service for Chevrolet owners.

The system, similar to the OnStar package offered in other markets such as the US and Australia, is called ChevyStar in Colombia and offers security, communication, information and road assistance via satellite.

GM claims ChevyStar, launched in Ecuador last year, and now also available in Colombia and Venezuela, is the only satellite customer support service to be offered by a vehicle maker in South America.

As in other markets, the system is an optional extra in new cars.

By pressing one of three buttons mounted above the rear view mirror a driver can contact the Chevrolet customer assistance centre, which can locate the vehicle via satellite and despatch emergency or breakdown services.

The centre can also locate and immobilise a stolen car and inform police of its whereabouts.

Centre operators can also direct drivers to local GM dealers and provide general information on Chevrolet products and services.

Depending on the package selected, drivers can also make hands-free mobile (cell) phone calls using voice recognition technology. Access to entertainment and news services is also offered.

In South America, Chevrolet offers two basic subscription packages: Silver, which is the basic service; and Platinum, an enhanced set of services.

The Platinum package includes an intelligent car alarm which will contact the assistance centre if an attempt is made to steal the car, even if the car battery has been disconnected; remote door unlocking if the driver accidentally locks the keys in the car; an alpha-numerically coded ignition interlock; and accident emergency assistance.

ChevyStar is available on Chevrolet models including the Opel-designed Corsa, GM Daewoo-designed Optra, Isuzu-designed D-Max truck, Suzuki-designed Grand Vitara SUV, Daewoo-deigned Epica and the US-designed TrailBlazer SUV.
