Ongoing import tariff reductions have reduced car prices and helped fuel the sales boom.


Sales rose 14% compared with July while 2006 volume of 120,385 to the end of August was up 34.3% year on year.


The top five brands were GM-Chevrolet (36.7%), Renault (17.1%), Hyundai (12.5%), Mazda (5.3%) and Toyota (4.4%).


Year to date, local assemblers accounted for 76,944 vehicles or 64.0% market share.


The volume of locally assembled vehicles rose 29.3% year on year while imports soared 97.4%.


August new model launches included the Kia Magentis, Sorento, Sedona and Opirus.
