Zhongding Power and EcoMotors say they have closed a commercial agreement to produce the Opoc engine, a technology they claim has the potential to be the world’s cleanest and lowest cost internal combustion engine.
Component conglomerate, Zhongding, will finance and construct the first US$200m Opoc plant in Anhui Province and will have a capacity of around 150,000 engines per year, with volume production expected to begin in 2014.
The Opoc engine technology developed and owned by EcoMotors, is claimed to deliver the same power level as conventional engines at half the size, with lower cost and lower emissions, as well as a potential improvement in fuel economy of 20%-50%.
“Continued progress in development of the Opoc engine has brought us to the next phase of development,” said Zhongding Holding chairman and CEO, Xia Ding Hu.
“With backing from both our provincial and national governmental bodies, we are now ready to complete the design of the engine as we head toward launching an Opoc engine manufacturing facility in Anhui Province.”
For his part, EcoMotors board member and Khosla Ventures partner, which leads its China activities, Andrew Chung, noted: “This partnership represents another opportunity for US-China collaboration in scaling clean technologies.
