Volkswagen has increased its target for sales in China and now expects to deliver 900,000 vehicles this year.

In a statement issued today it said that in the first nine months of the year sales by its two Chinese joint ventures, Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen were up over 30% to 684,786 vehicles.

Volkswagen brand sales were 594,270 units, up 27.9% on a year ago, while Audi sales were up 25.9% to 76,168 units. Skoda sold 14,094 vehicles, up from just 518 last year. Most of the vehicles were assembled locally, with just 13,000 imported.

“We are now targeting 900,000 vehicles in 2007. Volkswagen in China is ahead of its restructuring plan and in best condition for the challenges in the worldwide most competitive market,” Volkswagen chairman Martin Winterkorn said.

VW China president and CEO Winfried Vahland added: “Besides the outstanding sales record with a new target of 900,000 vehicles in 2007 we also achieved to increase our profitability in the third quarter faster than in the already promising first half year.”
