Toyota has said it will double capacity at its new Guangzhou plant in China to meet strong demand for the Camry, according to Reuters.

A second shift will be introduced from October or November, increasing capacity to 200,000 units a year. The workforce will be increased from 2,100 to 3,500 units.

Toyota started building the Camry at Guanghzou last month.

The new US$475m plant is a joint venture with Guanghzou Automobile and is located in the outskirts of Guangzhou in a district called Nansha.

The Chinese-built Camry features the AZ engine made by Toyota’s local joint venture, Guangqi Toyota Engine Co., Ltd. (GTE) and has been slightly restyled to appeal to Chinese buyers.
