Toyota says it is not aware of reports suggesting Chinese subsidies for hybrid and electric vehicles would only apply to domestic and not overseas brands.
Chinese media are reporting the government has announced subsidies for domestically-manufactured hybrids and EVs, but that the grants will not extend to foreign designated models – a situation say reports that had led to Toyota abandoning plans to make its newest Prius in China.
“I am not aware of any issue which would have appeared lately around this,” a Toyota Motor Europe spokesman in Belgium told just-auto. The situation about Prius in China is we started in 2005 – the second generation until 2009 – [and] we have not yet decided production of the third generation in China.
“This is something we are considering but to my knowledge, we have not yet [decided] any timing.”
Second generation Prius production stopped at the end of last year in China.
