The China Industry Daily News reports that Shanghai Volkswagen has announced that it will introduce a new model, the Santana 4000, to the Chinese market in 2007.
The company said it has spent over 200 million yuan to train its R&D staff, and has sent 40 technicians to take part in a 3-year automobile-development training program in Germany. Before 2006, the company hopes to release a new independently developed model.
During a period from 1994 to 2002, Shanghai Volkswagen developed the Santana 2000 with the help of its affiliates in Brazil and Germany. However, the company began to develop products independently after 2003, culminating in the introduction of the Santana 3000, the report said.
