Skoda Auto will start production of its Yeti SUV in China in 2013 and plans to build up capacity, dealerships and new products to boost its share in the country, according to a report in the China Daily.
Skoda chairman Winfried Vahland told the newspaper that a final agreement for production of the Yeti was signed by the Czech car company and Shanghai Volkswagen last week.
Skoda had a market share of 1.4% in China last year and the company plans to more than double that figure by 2015, Vahland said.
The company sold 167,000 cars in China in the first 11 months of this year, up 56% making it the biggest market for Skoda accounting for one-fifth of the brand’s global sales.
Skoda already produces passenger cars in China. It produced 131,779 cars in the country in 2009 and wanted to produce 500,000 cars in China in the future.
