Mazda is preparing to restart production of the Mazda 3 in China, according to Dow Jones.

Ford Mazda Motor and Changan Automobile were forced by the Chinese government to cease production of the model just two months after the start of production of the Mazda 3, sold locally as the Axela, in China.

Authorities reportedly argued that the joint venture partners had not completed the necessary requirements or received the required approvals to start producing the model. In fact the government appears to have been concerned that the car was being distributed by a separate company to the one that was producing the car.

The car was being produced by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Corp., a joint venture between the three companies, but it was being sold by by FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co., a venture between Mazda and China’s state-owned FAW Group. FAW Mazda, also sells the Mazda 6, produced by FAW.

Dow Jones said no official agreement has yet been reached, and there is no timetable for the resumption of production, although Kenneth Hsu, vice president of Ford Motor China, confirmed that Changan Ford Mazda is preparing the raw materials, staff, and equipment needed for the resumption of Mazda 3’s production.
