FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle, a 50-50 partnership between General Motors and China’s FAW Group, has started operations at its new plant in Changchun, Jiling Province.

The new plant currently has an annual production capacity of 80,000 light commercial vehicles, Gasgoo.com reported, citing the official Xinhua news agency. Pick-ups will be initially manufactured at the plant followed by SUVs, light buses and other GM products and, as demand increases in the world’s largest auto market, the capacity will be expanded to 200,000 units.

The FAW-GM joint venture was established in August 2009, with a registered capital of CNY1.2bn (US$176m) and a total investment of CNY2bn. Based on FAW’s existing production facilities in Changchun, the JV is also operated by Harbin Light Vehicle and Hongta Yunnan Automotive Manufacturing.
