Mazda#;s local partner will build the updated Familia (323) in China from July, badging the car as a ‘Mazda#; to lure extra customers, Bloomberg News reported.
Bloomberg said that Mazda already sells the redesigned Familia/323 in Japan and North America.
FAW Hainan Motor will assemble the car from CKD packs shipped from Japan, Bloomberg added.
The current Familia, built in China as a 1.8-litre saloon, is assembled by FAW Hainan and sold as a ‘Haima#;, the Chinese word for sea horse, the Bloomberg report said.
Mazda has not revealed sales targets for the new model. FAW Hainan has assembled the Familia since 1994 and has also built Mazda#;s Premacy minivan since last June, Bloomberg said, adding that 5,705 minivans were sold in the first 10 months.
Bloomberg said that FAW Hainan plans to increase both the local content in the cars it assembles and sales.
