The China joint ventures of Hyundai Motor and Ford Motor have recalled 151,397 locally made cars due to mechanical faults, according to company and government sources.


Beijing Hyundai Motor said it would recall 98,559 cars with ignition problems. The Elantra and Sonata models were built between 1 October,2004 and 22 March, 2005.


Beijing Hyundai told the official Xinhua news agency it would contact the car owners and has also set up two hotlines for them to call.


Changan Ford Automobile in Chongqing has recalled 52,838 Focus sedans, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The cars were made between 17 June, 2005 and 30 July, 2006 and have potential problems with fuel pump wiring. In serious cases the defect could lead to engine failure.


Changan Ford told Xinhua it had not yet received any reports on damages caused by the defect.
