Passenger car sales in China rose 73% to 418,900 units in January, according to Reuters, citing data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
Vehicle sales rose 45% to 530,100 units.
The growth followed a 21.4% increase in sales in 2005, to almost 4m units, and a 15% increase in 2004.
The Chinese market, once dominated by a few makes, is become increasingly competitive.
The January leader was Shanghai GM, with sales of 28,200 units, followed by Shanghai Volkswagen (22,100), Beijing Hyundai (21,800), Chery (21,700) and Dongfeng Nissan (20,700).
