Hyundai Mobis has opened a cold weather vehicle drive testing site in northeastern China, in an attempt to enhance its products quality, reports Yonhap News Agency.

According to the company, the site, which is spread across around 3m square metres, is located 125 kilometres from Heihe in Heilongjiang Province near the Russian border. It features tracks and roads that can permit testing of parts and vehicles in extreme conditions. Additionally, it includes an infrastructure for evaluation of test results and administration of on-site modifications on cars and parts, based on results.

“It has snow and ice-covered roads, steep inclines that can all be used to check components like steering and braking systems,” said Hyundai Mobis.

As temperatures can decrease to the minus 40 degree Celsius, the site would prove to be a standard ground for checking the durability of several parts, including smart parking assist systems and electronic brakes. The Chinese site was selected due to the temperature there being 10 degrees lower than the mercury readings at the company’s Arjeplog testing ground in Sweden.

“Car parts companies such as Continental and TRW all have similar test sites in the area,” said the company.

The company added that a test site in China would also be useful in sending the collected data to its technical research centre in Shanghai and its auto parts plant in Wuxi. These associations can help Hyundai Mobis in meeting the demands by consumers and car parts users.

“The location of the vehicles test site is also advantageous in expanding the market presence of Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, the flagship companies of the automotive group, in China,” the company said.
