Vehicle sales in China in the first six months rose 23.3% from a year ago to 4.4m units, while production rose 22.4% to 4.5m, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers was reported to have said on its website.

There were no further details, the Associated Press (AP) said.

Local forecasts are that sales and output for the full year will reach a record 8.5m, the official Xinhua News Agency was said to have reported.

AP noted that China last year passed Japan to become the world’s second largest vehicle market with sales of 7.2m units, including trucks and buses, and production of 7.3m. Passenger car sales reached 3.8m last year.

Chinese factories produced 3.2m passenger cars and 1.3m commercial vehicles in the January-June period, and the 10 biggest manufacturers sold 3.6m vehicles, for 83% market share, Xinhua said, according to the Associated Press.
