Shanghai GM, General Motors‘ manufacturing JV in China, has recalled 194,107 Buick Excelle GT cars for headlight checks.

According to The Detroit News, high beam bulbs in cars made from 10 October 2009 to 2 July 2012, cannot be switched off under extreme conditions.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) received a number of complaints related to the problem.

The company plans to inspect and replace the bulbs.

AQSIQ said GM might have to widen the recall if similar problems arise in more vehicles.

According to just-auto‘s Production Life Database (PLDB), there are two Excelle model lines in China. The older version is a Chinese-built variant of the former Daewoo Lacetti which went on sale – in four-door sedan form – in August 2003. This was followed by the five-door HRV in October 2004.

The HRV was discontinued in January 2010 and replaced by the Buick Excelle XT. The Excelle GT, a sedan version of the newer, Opel Astra-based, XT hatchback, was launched in China in June 2010.

The old-shape Excelle sedan remains in production and continues to sell extremely well in China. A facelifted Excelle went on sale there in February 2013.
