Ford’s Asia Pacific and Africa region posted record sales in September of 78,700 units, up 27%, while sales of 651,856 so far this year are running 40% ahead of last year.
In China and India, Ford has sold 482,129 vehicles so far this year, a 50% increase, and, with strong demand for the new locally-built Fiesta, sales in Thailand more than tripled from the same month a year ago, rising 264% to 2,049 units.
September was the company’s best-ever monthly sales result in the Asia Pacific and Africa. Regional chief Joe Hinrichs said: “We are working hard to expand sales and production capacity, and to offer more of the vehicles from our global portfolio to markets in this region.”
In China, Ford and its joint ventures reported sales of 50,970 units in September, a 26% increase from September 2009. Sales for the first three quarters stand at 419,073 vehicles in the country, up 40%.
Ford expects 70% of its growth in the next 10 years to come from its Asia Pacific and Africa region where total industry sales are expected to increase from 16m units in 2009 to an estimated 35m units by 2018.
Ford has invested US$4bn since 2006 in the region and employs more than 25,000 people there. In India, the company has spent $500m this year to double production capacity, launch the hot-selling Figo, expand exports, and increase engine production capacity to 250,000 units.

Ford is also expanding in Thailand with construction of a new US$450m assembly plant scheduled for completion in 2012.
General Motors China reported sales up 15% in September to 208,353. Sales for the year are running at 1.77m, up just over 37%.
GM has a joint manufacturing venture with SAIC in Shanghai and also makes minivans and pickup trucks in a three-way tie-up with SAIC and Liuzhou Wuling Automobile in southern China.
It has another venture with FAW Group, making light commercial vehicles.
