Volkswagen has stopped production at its Chengdu facility in the Chinese province of Sichuan because of the powerful earthquake that hit the region on Monday.

According to Handelsblatt, there was no visible impact on the facility, but it was being checked.

The joint venture with FAW produces around 24,000 Jetta models each year.

Toyota also had to halt its Sichuan FAW plant while safety checks were completed. That plant produces up to 13,000 Coaster microbuses and Prado SUVs annually.
