Chery Automobile plans to set up a plant for manufacturing engines and gearboxes in Brazil, reported Macauhub, citing Luis Curi, chairman of the group’s Brazilian subsidiary. He said the planned factory would produce one- and 1.5-litre engines.

According to Curi, the investment amount and plant location have not been finalised but everything will be decided quickly so the company can manufacture engines and gearboxes when its car factory begins operating.

Chery is spending US$400m to construct a vehicle plant in Jacareí, Sao Paulo, with initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles a year. The facility is expected to open around the end of 2013.

Curi said the factory would precede construction of a group technology centre in Brazil which could be established jointly with a science institution.
