Battery and car maker BYD launched its first premium multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in Beijing on Wednesday, pricing it to compete with or undercut both locally developed and built rivals and western minivans assembled by local joint ventures.
BYD, which until now has offered only sedans, said the M6 would be priced between CNY139,800 and CNY239,800 (US$20,890-$35,840).
The M6 would allow BYD to contest the fast growing premier MPV market, now dominated by General Motors’ GL8, Honda’s Odyessey and others, industry observers told Reuters.
The GL8 costs CNY218,000 to CNY350,200 and the Odyssey CNY216,800 to CNY269,800.
