BMW Brilliance is considering domestic production of the new BMW X3, gasgoo.com reported, citing Chinese website auto.163.com.

Sales chief Daniel Kirchert said the joint venture was considering pricing imported X3s between CNY545,000 and CNY709,000 (US$83,257-$108,310). Due to the price being relatively high for an entry-level luxury vehicle, the JV is considering domestic production.

When asked about how competitive the X3 is compared to other entry-level vehicles, Kirchert said: “If it were me, I’d buy this one.”

Kirchert claimed BMW essentially created the market for luxury SUVs in China when it first imported the previous generation X3 in 2003. He added that BMW Brilliance would consider bringing in the X1 compact SUV if interest in the X3 was high enough.

BMW Brilliance builds a unique-to-China long wheelbase 5 series sedan aimed at chauffeur driven executives and government officials.
