January proved to be a good month for overall vehicle sales – especially trucks – in Canada with sales surpassing January 2010 levels by 3.6% to 84,509. For AIAMC (importers) members, January sales were down 2.9% from the 43,377 sold last year.

“Overall January sales were better than last year, but still below the previous five year average for the month of January,” said David Adams, president of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC).

“In conjunction with consumer confidence levels that are higher than they had been for the last six months, January’s relatively modest gain overall underscores that we are in a period of slower sales recovery, but overall sales growth, for 2011.

“For AIAMC member companies, the January results reflect the ongoing dichotomy amongst the membership where some members have sales for the month advancing by double digit sales increases, and in some cases enjoying record months, while the sales of others are declining by double digits.”

Overall truck sales continued to be strong at  52,390, up 13.2% from last January.   Truck sales for AIAMC members were up 7.9% from January 2010 sales of 16,610.   Overall passenger car sales started the year down 9.0% from January 2010 and likewise AIAMC member passenger car sales were down 9.6% from January 2010 sales of  26,767.

For the first month of 2011, truck sales exceeded 60% of the market comprising 62% of the overall market share.  Trucks comprised 42.6% of the vehicle sales market for AIAMC member companies in January.
